Preface

DZONGSAR JAMYANG KHYENTSE RINPOCHE

I am pleased to learn that Dr. David Kin-keung Chan (Yeshe Thaye) has, as the fulfillment of a vow, arranged for the publication of "Pema Osel", an English-Chinese bilingual journal specially dedicated to Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche and his activities. In this regard, there are different meanings for the journal's title according to various levels :

For the external level, the name represents the lotus (Pema) emerging from polluted waters while itself remaining pure. Just so, the wisdom of the Dharma is beyond pollution by worldly activities. Light (Osel) is the expression of wisdom which can penetrate and dispel the darkness of ignorance.

For the inner level, this is a name held by Kyabje Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche.1

For the secret level, Pema Osel Ling is the secret land of Guru Rinpoche where his palace Zangdor Palri is located, and this in itself represents the three bodies of the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya.

For the most secret level, each and every sentient being has the seed of enlightenment, the Buddha Nature, whose qualities are luminosity, clarity and brightness. It is situated in the avadhuti amidst the heart chakra as the amalgamation of wisdom wind and bindu, as our pure awareness.

I hope that Dr. Chan will continue, through his vow, to use this journal to help spread the Dharma for the benefits of those who have been like mothers to us - all sentient beings.

1 . This name was given to Kyabje Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche. In fact, this name was originally the Dharma name of Khyentse Rinpoche's own predecessor Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo the Great named Pema Osel Do-nga Lingpa.
